The Low Road

Instead of using the relative respect he enjoys from both sides of the aisle to call for the mudslinging to stop like John McCain did, Bob Dole decided to sling some mud himself: "here's, you know, a good guy, a good friend. I respect his record. But three Purple Hearts and never bled that I know of. I mean, they're all superficial wounds. Three Purple Hearts and you're out".

Never mind that to this day, John Kerry still carries shrapnel in his thigh.

Dole defended his words as just playing "hardball".

Slander is just playing "hardball"?

It didn't matter to Bob Dole that subverting the truth is a disservice to this country which has pressing problems that need to be addressed. What mattered was to show he is a party apparatchik who can still heed the call to play dirty.

One thing is clear: if there's still doubt that the Administration is knee deep in this shameful attacks on John Kerry, Bob Dole just proved it.
