Party OnLast night, as CBS's 60 Minutes showed the children orphaned by the tsunami in Banda Aceh, CNN's Larry King Live showed the hootin' and hollerin' at the Black Tie and Boots Inaugural Ball. George W. Bush excused all of the bacchanalian festivities and said no taxpayer money was spent in this $40 million "symbol of democracy". Never mind the part about taxpayer money being untrue. What he meant was, "we're loaded and we're flaunting it if we want to, war or no war, tsunami or no tsunami". Symbol of democracy? I thought holding fair elections, not wanton displays of indifference, is the symbol of democracy but that's just me. Lest I be accused of spoiling the party, I'm celebrating the coronation by linking to this excellent Salon article about the 34 -- and counting -- scandals of the Bush Administration. Four more years to go; there's going to be plenty more where that came from. +Save/Share | | |
