Grand DelusionsTypical for a man who has never faced the consequences of his actions:"Do you believe as Commander in Chief you have the authority to put the troops in there no matter what the Congress wants to do," 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley asks Bush in the short clip uploaded to the CBS News web site Friday night. So why is he obssessed with this fool's errand? Because winning is staying no matter the cost, even though the only guarantee he gives the nation that it'll work is that he says so: He put it far more bluntly when leaders of Congress visited the White House earlier on Wednesday. "I said to Maliki this has to work or you’re out," the president told the Congressional leaders, according to two officials who were in the room. Pressed on why he thought this strategy would succeed where previous efforts had failed, Mr. Bush shot back: "Because it has to."That and because the boy king had to show he's tougher than his father: Although the president was publicly polite, few of the key Baker-Hamilton recommendations appealed to the administration, which intensified its own deliberations over a new "way forward" in Iraq. How to look distinctive from the study group became a recurring theme.(h/t: Steve Benen) May God help us. Tags:
