Sinking ShipCurrent polls show that 56% of the American people disapprove of George W. Bush's handling of Social Security and only 38% believe major changes should be made to the system in the next two years. These figures confirm what Republican lawmakers experienced in town hall meetings across the country, where constituents were skeptical and at worst hostile to the privatization idea. Things are looking so grim the White House is telling party lawmakers they need to turn things around in 6 weeks. Even the Post and the Times report Senate Majority leader Bill Frist (R-TN) admitting the plan is all but dead until next year and may not involve private accounts at all. All the more reason for Democrats and pro-Social Security groups to stand firm and not throw Mr. Bush a lifesaver. Privatization in any shape or form is a bad idea. Any funds channeled to private accounts -- whether it's a carve out or from another source -- are funds taken away from Social Security, thereby weakening the system instead of strengthening it. Until privatization is off the table, there is nothing to discuss. +Save/Share | | |
