Iraq's ProgressIn previewing a Pentagon report which states that Iraq is on track, Donald Rumsfeld said this:[T]hough they've suffered numerous setbacks, terrorists remain effective, adaptable, and intent on carrying out attacks on Iraqi civilians and Iraqi officials... And this:
Gee, things are just right on schedule. Except only 3 out of 107 Iraqi army battalions can fight on their own. Except the Sunni faction -- considered the "backbone of the insurgency" stopped participating in drafting the Constitution because they're being gunned down. Except the Assembly can't even agree on what to call Iraq. Except women's groups are protesting the constitutional draft's limitation on women's rights. Except soldier morale is low, almost 1,800 of them have died and more than 13,000 have been wounded. Except 25,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed and continue to get killed since the invasion. Except there's so much violence that a national moment of silence was ignored because "[i]f we stand silent for three minutes for each one, there will come a day where we will stand for hours." Some progress. +Save/Share | | |
